Quick Summary:

SPY prints hammer candle formation at close. Entered 4 swing trade based on the formation (NUGT, DIG, HABT, RGLS). Lots to talk about today in video and notes.

Video

http://youtu.be/6mkwZU88GfYI highly recommend that you watch the video, rather than just read the notes. I talk about strategies, entries and exits more in depth in the video, yet short enough that they are only 5-10 minutes long.

Indexes and Game Plan

We talked about taking it easy today, monitoring the market and sitting it out unless we got some kind of clue to go long, like a bullish engulfing or hammer candle. Today opened weak, reversed and held the hammer candle that formed intra-day. That gave us reason to get long a few swings at the close. While I expect a bounce, there is no indication yet that the remount failure has failed and the downtrend is no longer in play. The overall pattern is still negative, and remains so until the 50 dma is cleared with strength. We are gaming bounce within a larger trend. The game plan is to manage the long positions closely. We are looking for quick profits from a bounce off strength today. We will monitor focus list longs for entry, but I will not be aggressive since I have 5 positions. For those that are looking to get more aggressive, I will point out entries in the intra-day report.

We are in the midst of earnings season and will start to build an earnings breakout watchlist, as we did last season.

Trades

In the morning exited GOOGL for small loss, and remainder of RGLS and DIG positions.

Approximately 10 minutes before close I entered RGLS, DIG, NUGT and HABT. These entries were based off the SPY hammer, which allowed me to take some swings. These are smaller than normal position size (under normal $20,000-30,000). I decided take smaller positions and spread it out between sectors (retail/biotech/energy/gold miners) rather than take 1 or 2 bigger positions.

The gold play is a stab at the pullback pre-confirmation. We have talked about timing entries on pullback or with confirmation (see video for more detail).

Keep in mind we treat every trade as a separate trade, even when we already excited the same stock. I exited DIG and RGLS in the morning, but the close gave me strong signals so I did not let the exits influence me. I actually did try to look for a different biotech due to strength of hammer in biotech ETF IBB (focus list stocks AGIO, BLUE, KITE, CEMP), but RGLS was the best setup.

*Note: I have received requests to update the spreadsheet. I fell behind and will eventually catch up to 2014. In the meantime, I'll try to list all 2015 trades in a spreadsheet tonight and send it to you.
